Services

Spectrum Advocacy works one on one to give tools to parents to help them through the maze of the public school systems. Meeting services can be done in person or virtually.

Assisting parents with writing letters to request:

  • An evaluation to assess for special education services.

  • An evaluation for a 504 plan.

  • An Individualized Education Program (“IEP”) Team Meeting.

  • An Independent Educational Evaluation (“IEE”) at Public Expense.

Filing complaints with Colorado Department of Education and Office of Civil Rights

  •  I assist with drafting and filing complaints to the Colorado Department of Education.

  • I assist with drafting and filing complaints to the US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights.

Participating in mediation and in due process hearings

  • I attend and participate in formal mediation meetings scheduled with the child’s school district.

  • I am a non-attorney law-advocate and cannot represent families in a legal capacity in a due process administrative hearing.

Review in a non-legal capacity my understanding of certain provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the 504 process and help parents determine which program(s) are appropriate for their child.

For a child who cannot progress smoothly through the regular curriculum:
“…his IEP needs not to aim for grade-level advancement. But his educational program must be appropriately ambitious in light of his circumstances, just as advancement from grade to grade is appropriately ambitious for most children in the regular classroom. The goals may differ, but every child should have a chance to meet challenging objectives”
